Make no mistake - when you succeed, it makes for an amazing feeling, like you’re perfectly in-tune with the music and visuals, truly ascending to a neon-soaked digital experience… but the overwhelming majority of the time you’ll be stopped again and again and again and slapped back to the last checkpoint, like the game is shouting at you, “now get it right! I demand perfection!” And you will mess up - you need to have lightning-fast timing to get past even some of the earlier levels. Each stretch of one of the game’s levels allows only one mistake - making a second mistake means restarting the section over again. However… wow, this difficulty is absolutely insane. Between this and the shifts in the visuals, this game won’t get boring at all. The game does a good job shaking things up and keeping this gameplay infused with variety - one moment the view will be behind your car as you’re jumping back and forth between clear stretches of road to avoid digital obstacles, and the next moment the view may shift overhead to have you dodging cars from a top-down perspective. Control sticks are not used during gameplay, and for this type of game that’s just fine, as Neon Drive plays more like Music-Rhythm games like Frequency and Amplitude than it does like your average Racing game. Players shift back and forth between different lanes at the touch of a button (you can use the touchscreen as well, but your best bet is probably using either the shoulder buttons or a combination of a shoulder button and a face button). To be clear, the mechanics in this game are fantastic. So this game looks amazing and sounds amazing, and of course the next question is, does it play amazing? The answer to that is… only if you are a real masochist. For some good examples to what to expect, check out City and Miami. The game’s 80s-style electronica themes are not only perfectly-suited for the game’s theme, but they’re really catchy as well.
What’s more, it’s an absolute delight to listen to as well. This game is an absolute delight to watch.

Yet despite that there’s nothing about this that’s meant to look realistic, it is still full of nice little touches, like light trails being left by your tail lights, the world around you constantly shifting to new variations on its central theme. The presentation in this game is phenomenal - the screen comes alive with color, with everything looking like an 80s-style computer-generated pseudo-futuristic cityscape. This game was first released in 2015 on mobile devices, and later ported to other platforms, making its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
